Greetings Countbinistas!

So farewell then, Gareth Southgate. So much for Labour bringing stability to England. Sir Keir has barely met Larry the Downing Street cat, and already the Three Lions are looking for a new custodian.

Don’t assume that the football-mad new PM hasn’t already wondered if he can nationalise the England manager’s job. Could the decision over whether Foden or Bellingham should play number 10 be left to Westminster’s Number 10? Stranger things have happened. (Like using a corner to pass back to the goalie.) But I digress.

Being a self-respecting, cynical political leader as I am, it was impossible for me to start this newsletter with anything other than sporting matters. But just like on the football field, the last few days in politics are going to be hard to forget.
